A 4-partner law firm reclaims 14 billable hours a week.

Engagement letters drafted in minutes. Invoices ready for one-click approval. The partners finally went home before 8pm.

// disclosure

This is a composite case study illustrating the format Quietwork uses when reporting on real engagements. The pattern (industries, systems, payback shape) reflects diagnostics we've run; the specific client, quote, and numbers are not a single named engagement. Replaced with named work as it ships.

The shape of the engagement.

A four-partner boutique law firm in the CBD, mixed corporate and dispute work, three associates and two paralegals. The partners were doing 60-hour weeks but billing closer to 45. The gap was the work that nobody could bill for: drafting engagement letters from prior templates, reconciling time entries with WIP, writing the plain-English invoice narratives that clients actually paid against.

The Walkthrough mapped one ordinary Wednesday across the practice. Three out of four partners spent more than 90 minutes that day on engagement-letter language pulled from prior matters. Two of the three were doing it after 7pm. Nobody had touched the matter substance until the next morning.

Two builds, four weeks apart. The Intake Drafter consumes the firm's standard intake form, runs the conflict-check inputs, and produces a draft engagement letter in the firm's template with the scope clauses pre-pulled from the closest prior matter. Partner review, two clauses to read carefully, sent. The Invoice Engine reads the month's time entries, drafts invoices in the firm's format with plain-English narratives, and queues them for one-click approval at the end of the cycle.

The hours-returned number — 14 a week per associate — is the headline. The quieter result was that all four partners started leaving the office by 8pm. Two of them rediscovered hobbies. One of them stopped saying "we need to hire" for the first time in eighteen months.
